Gallery 3    Temples

The Temples of Malta have stood the test of time, sitting in the scorching sun, torrential rain and eroding winds. Now after 5,000 years they are fading from their past glory, but we can still have a reasonable idea of what they were like.

What we don’t know is why they were built, be it temple, solar calendar or a birthing place to produce “special offspring”. We can only guess.

The natural colour of the sandstone against the blue sky has a mesmerizing effect.

These huge stones and the people who lived amongst them are patiently waiting, watching, almost mocking, as we try to understand. Hoping maybe for someone or something to reactivate them.

I have a feeling of energy at all these sites, creative power that links the earth energy with that of the Gods.

The shape of the rooms and dolmens, are conducive to this, flowing better in rounded rooms than sharp corners. Doorways are important, tunneling the energy to be dispersed to the next area. Some spaces almost stop time, they have a calming effect, trancelike

The temple people’s love of the spiral and it’s variations are evident in many places and has inspired me to construct bowls with spirals of clay.

Pottery was also special for these people, as apart from functional use, many pots and statues were made in miniature, to be used in ceremonies or buried with their owners.

Sketching for me is not easy here.  It is feelings I attune to, in order to implant them into the clay, much as the temple builders did, when they built and decorated these sacred places.
