Clay Play

A friend of mine was teaching me to write my web site, and when she had explained something, told me to play on the pc. I thought it was just a matter of being shown something and then doing it. I didn’t realise that there were many ways of doing it and...... what would happen if I tried this..... or that?

When I started to play I realised that I could do endless things, sometimes it was frustrating, things went wrong, but it was all up to me to choose what to do.

Working with clay should be like that. The teacher can show you a technique or way of doing something, but then you have to play and find out the possibilities and exactly what you want from the clay. Lately we all seem to be short of time and want things now. No time to play and enjoy ourselves. We want to get from A to B in the quickest time, not realising that the time involved in getting there, is the real learning process.

When I want a relaxing moment, I take a ball of clay and close my eyes and think about this ball of earth in my hands. How old it must be and where it probably came from.

I try to imagine the clay as an extension of myself and slowly pinch my thumb into the middle working down to the base.

When I feel that the base is the right thickness, I slowly pinch, spiralling round. The other hand is turning the pot just like the wheel would. The walls get thinner and the pot grows larger.

It’s a very satisfying feeling, bonding with the clay and playing. When you finish and open your eyes, more often than not the pot is a beautiful pinch pot which then can be decorated in many different ways.
